Private 1:1 SAT & ACT Coaching

Meet your instructor: Brian Lam

Howdy!

I have been tutoring both the SAT/ACT for nearly 7 years and have helped hundreds of students achieve their target scores. Over half of my students scored a 1420+ SAT or 33+ ACT, earned over 45 perfect section scores combined, and have even earned perfect scores on the SAT and ACT. I myself scored a perfect 1600 in 2019, but I take the SAT regularly to stay relevant and earned a 1580 in November 2025. My students don’t take dozens of practice tests for a handful of points, but increase their scores as much as 200 points in under 2 months.

Most tutors simply “monitor” a student during a session and “review” incorrect answers but that way of learning is very passive. Many strong students aren’t losing points because they don’t know the content but because they are rushing, second-guessing, or run out of time. When I was a high school student, I was tired of SAT tutors who sat and just timed me while I work and reviewed my mistakes when I was done instead of focusing on strategies that improved my scores. I did dozens of practice tests (over 40!) with minimal improvement because I wasn’t taught to master the strategies first. Now as an SAT/ACT coach, my philosophy is that a tutor should not “hide” behind their credentials or the test prep material, but instead take a proactive role in helping students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills while building confidence. Unlike with other tutors, my students walk out of each session being able to describe what they mastered each session and not just say they “did questions with their tutor”.

Most of the students I work with are not lacking ability but are simply stuck. They may already be working hard, taking practice tests, and putting in the time, but their scores are not improving the way they should. They feel frustrated, inconsistent, or unsure of how to approach the test. What they need is not more effort, but a clearer strategy. Other students we work with are already capable of strong scores, and the challenge is not effort, but knowing how to approach the test efficiently and consistently. That’s why we begin with a targeted diagnostic & precision strategy to maximize scores fast. Every student starts with a deep dive into their performance — not just what they get wrong, but why. From there, we build a focused plan that prioritizes the areas that will drive the biggest score increases instead of wasting time on material that won’t move the needle.

SAT, ACT, or PSAT?

A parent-friendly guide to the major college admissions tests, including what each exam measures, how it is scored, and how to decide which path is right for your child.

College Admissions

SAT

The SAT is a digital college admissions exam focused on Reading & Writing and Math. It is often a strong fit for students who prefer shorter questions, built-in pacing, and a more streamlined test format.

How it’s scored

The SAT is scored from 400–1600, with two section scores: Reading & Writing and Math. Each section is scored from 200–800.

When it may be the better fit

The SAT may be a better fit for students who do well with shorter reading passages, prefer a digital format, and want more time per question compared with the ACT.

What parents should know

Strong SAT performance depends on more than content knowledge. Students need efficient reading habits, clean algebra skills, adaptive-test awareness, and a clear timing plan.

College Admissions

ACT

The ACT is a college admissions exam that emphasizes speed, accuracy, and endurance across English, Math, Reading, and optional Science. It can be a strong option for decisive students who move quickly.

How it’s scored

The ACT is scored from 1–36. The composite score is based on English, Math, and Reading, with Science now offered as an optional section.

When it may be the better fit

The ACT may be a better fit for students who are fast readers, comfortable with straightforward but time-sensitive questions, and strong at maintaining focus across multiple sections.

What parents should know

The ACT often rewards pacing discipline. Many students know the material but lose points because they rush, get stuck, or run out of time before finishing a section.

Practice + Scholarship Pathway

PSAT

The PSAT is part of the SAT Suite and helps students build toward the SAT. For juniors, the PSAT/NMSQT can also matter for National Merit Scholarship recognition.

How it’s scored

The PSAT/NMSQT is scored from 320–1520, with Reading & Writing and Math section scores ranging from 160–760.

When it matters most

The PSAT is especially important in 11th grade for students aiming for National Merit recognition. For 9th and 10th graders, it is best used as an early benchmark.

What parents should know

PSAT results can help identify whether a student is trending stronger toward the SAT or ACT. It is often the best early data point for building a smart testing plan.
